|a In January 2019, a rapid tissue loss disease showing signs and species susceptibility characteristics matching those described for Florida's Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD), was found affecting reefs off of St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The coral reef where the St. Thomas outbreak was first identified lost >50% of coral cover within six months to purported SCTLD suggesting another Caribbean epizootic, which has hallmarks of similar disease waves that have altered Caribbean reef diversity and function. |
