|a "This study examined the relationship between the occurrence of S. marcescens and white pox disease signs in A. palmata populations in the US Virgin Islands. Sampling occurred at 3 sites varying in anthropogenic influence where A. palmata populations were locally abundant and white pox disease was known to occur. Coral mucus samples were analyzed from diseased and healthy A. palmata along with healthy Siderastrea siderea using qPCR to determine the presence and abundance of S. marcescens. Water samples were also analyzed with qPCR to determine the presence of S. marcescens and other enterococcus. Prevalence of disease was also measured at sample sites using circular plots following standard protocols (Williams et al. 2006). S. marcescens was detected in 11% of coral mucus samples and only from disease A. palmata and S. siderea. However, S. marcescens was not found in all diseased A palmata lesions and S. marcescens did not significantly differ in concentration between diseased A. palmata, S. siderea colonies and water samples. Results of this study suggest that while S. marcescens was associated with disease lesions, it may not be the primary pathogen of white pox in the Virgin Islands" |
